I want to share with you a third quality that is very important to have when surviving trauma-Courage. Surviving trauma through courage is a quality that has gotten me through the toughest of times! Everyone possesses courage. Courage can be developed through adversity. I’ve always said it’s not what you go through that makes you the person you are, it’s how you react to the situation that you’re dealt with that makes you the person you are! Courage and Strength go hand in hand. You can read about the quality of strength here in my previous post. [Read more...]

CREATE YOUR OWN SUPPORT SYSTEM
If you’re struggling with any kind of challenge, be it physical, mental or emotional; or if you’ve recently suffered a loss of some kind, you can certainly benefit from building your own support system. Many environments offer support systems; however, if you find yourself without a job or out of school because of what you’ve been going through, finding the support you need is a challenge in itself. Nevertheless, in order to improve, heal, or enjoy a better quality of life, a solid support system is a must.
What is Empathy?
As stated in thefreedictionary.com, Empathy is: “Identification with and understanding of another’s situation, feelings, and motives.” Being empathetic towards others is so critical especially when they are going through a hardship. Being able to see through another person’s perspective and understand what the person is going through is a gift. When we are able to do that, we can see how they feel. Putting yourself in another’s situation is a conscious decision people can learn to do. [Read more...]

Begin with small advances. Find one person who can offer support. [Read more...]
Is Happiness a Choice?
I am all for positive thinking and doing things that make you happy. I’m all for positive self-talk and subconscious messages. But I want to share some food for thought with you. Have you ever heard of the saying, “He laughed to death”? I want to share a story about a man who went to his mother’s funeral and right in the middle of the funeral the man busted out laughing. All the people at the funeral thought he hated his mom and they assumed that the mom must have been cruel. But as he was going home from the funeral, he shared with his friends that he had no idea why he busted out laughing. He felt absolutely terrible about it. The next morning, he woke up and had another laughing attack. He went to the hospital but could not stop laughing and he actually died from suffocation because he could not catch his breath. Well, they did an autopsy on his brain to find a tumor pressing right on the laugh center in the brain. Just like there is a hunger spot, a sleep spot, a reading spot, a speaking spot, a fear spot, etc. there is also a laugh spot. So don’t you think it’s possible there is a happiness center in the brain? There are so many scientists learning new discoveries about the brain right now. In fact, maybe it’s even barbaric to believe that people can just easily choose to be happy. I’ve had much experience with this topic myself. I know that when my brain function is normal, I have no problem with my happiness meter. In fact, even though I have lost five years of my life to amnesia, I’m still a happy person. I love life, pursuing my dreams, learning, and sharing. But when I’m sick, my level of happiness does not even compare to when I’m healthy. I know that is a part of the brain that is being affected by the episode. So if you or someone you care about is having a difficult time with their happiness level, maybe you could rethink how you treat the situation. If you’re harsh toward them, maybe you could be more supportive and understanding. Sometimes happiness is not a choice. It may be that your happiness center is being attacked.
