And I received their classic yoga mat and an extra soothing item – a soy meditation candle with a lavender scent! I want to share with you a few reasons why yoga is important for the mind and body especially when living with a chronic condition. [Read more…]

12 Tips for Living With Kleine-Levin Syndrome (KLS)

Living With KLS12 Tips for Living With Kleine-Levin Syndrome (KLS):

Environment: Create a physical environment that promotes safety and reduces fear. The goal is to promote feelings of security and belonging for the KLSer. Try to keep the environment very quiet with minimal stimulation. Some ideas for the caregivers are to: 1) put your phones on silent. 2) Draw the blinds so that it is not bright in the room. 3) Watch television with closed captioning so that there is no noise. 4) Let the KLSer sleep. Avoid trying to wake him/her up or keep him/her awake. KLSers need their sleep. 5) Make sure the KLSer stays hydrated.  [Read more…]

Living Bold Despite Living With KLS!

I am blessed to have such an amazing support system! Gratefully, I have gone from not having many friends to building a community of supportive people! I thrive on their messages of strength and hope. I have recently entered a contest for people living bold despite living with a health ailment. If you have a moment, do you mind voting for me? I would so appreciate your vote! You can “vote” for me once a day through August 8th. You can vote here: http://woobox.com/9v5v9b/vote/for/4216554Through my journey, I have discovered that when you give, you receive and if you ask, you shall receive. Your teen years are supposed to be the best of your life, full of new discoveries, fun times, and exciting challenges. But I lost a good few years between the ages of 10 and 20 because I was either asleep in bed or functioning sick due to Kleine-Levin Syndrome (KLS).

I have always said that it’s not what you go through that makes you the person you are, it’s how you react to the situation that you are dealt with that makes you the person you are. I have looked beyond my struggle and have found meaning in my life by helping others.

Now 24, my mission is to improve the quality of life for those struggling or anyone experiencing chronic illness by providing an online community to connect and engage and to offer a heart full of compassion to let others know they are important and cared for.  [Read more…]

Alanna Wong & Dr. Watson’s Kleine-Levin Syndrome (KLS) Interview

KLS

KLS

The following video is a short clip from the interview I had with Dr. Nathaniel Watson M.D., M.Sc in Seattle this past February. I am grateful to be able to speak out about Kleine-Levin Syndrome (KLS) and help those that are suffering. Thankfully, my KLS episodes have improved and are much lighter now! For a while, it was like taking 1 step forward 3 steps back every time a KLS episode hit. Now it’s like taking 3 steps forward, 1 step back when a KLS episode hits! It’s not what you go through that makes you the person you are, it’s how you react to the situation that you are dealt with that makes you the person you are. I have looked beyond my struggle and have found meaning in my life by helping others!

I am grateful for the blessings in my life, and I offer those interested the opportunity to bless someone else’s life by sending them a card in the mail on me. I enjoy helping others send a card to someone who needs to hear from them. I have spent the past six years dedicating my life to raising awareness for Kleine-Levin Syndrome (KLS) in an effort to help other sufferers by raising funds for research, engaging and connecting with the community, and facilitating the KLS Foundation website. Contact me here if you want to send a card to your loved one: http://alannawonglife.com/contact/

If you are struggling with KLS, I want you to know it does eventually get better with time.

Premier Hypersomnia Conference to be Hosted in Atlanta, GA

Living With Hypersomnia

Living With Hypersomnia Conference

Lloyd Johnson and I had the pleasure of crossing paths in early 2013. Lloyd has a similar sleep disorder as Kleine-Levin Syndrome (KLS), called Idiopathic Hypersomnia. We have been able to lean on each other for support and I am proud to call him my friend. Lloyd is very involved in the Idiopathic Hypersomnia community and he and some community members have created the first ever Living With Hypersomnia Conference!

The conference will be held in Atlanta, GA: Saturday March 8th dedicated to Idiopathic Hypersomnia. Topics covered will include the latest research into this condition, emerging treatments and sessions to help people cope with this disorder. The one-day conference being held at the Atlanta Airport Marriott Gateway Hotel from 9AM to 4PM has already attracted over 100 attendees from as far away as Australia. Attendees include patients, their supporters, medical researchers, and members of the pharmaceutical industry.  [Read more…]

Kleine Levin Syndrome (KLS) Poem

Kleine Levin Syndrome (KLS) Poem

Kleine Levin Syndrome (KLS) Poem

Kleine Levin Syndrome (KLS) Poem

I used to wonder Why Me? Why God? Why did this happen? What did I do to deserve Kleine Levin Syndrome (KLS)? But as the years have passed, I want you to know that I have finally understood this: Why not me? This poem was written during a time of extreme struggle!

 Why God?

Will I ever know?

Can you understand?

I’m too young, too young, too young

To lay in bed and lose my mind;

And watch the world pass me by.

Is there peace on earth or peace of mind?

I’m only a child, God, why can’t they be kind?

I know you conceived me to be perfect.

It is not your fault my brain got sick;

But can’t they help me soothe my pain?

Instead of blame me, judge me all in vain.

For if they really saw the truth,

They would recoil in shame.

I am your child worthy of love,

I forgive the cruelties I’ve had to bear.

I ask for healing, health, and wealth

So I may help and inspire those to follow.

Despite the pain and suffering endured too long,

I will continue to be strong.

“Imagine” by: Alanna Wong

Imagine

Imagine

“Imagine” by: Alanna Wong

Imagine if we never left a fallen family member behind.

Imagine if we see someone where they are in the exact moment and not where we expect them to be.

Imagine if we show others compassion by putting ourselves in their shoes.

Imagine if we love each other unconditionally and not just show our love when it’s convenient for us.

Imagine if we forgive ourselves for our wrongdoings and we forgive the people that have hurt us.

Imagine if we accepted all ailments in this world even if it’s an illness we can’t see.

Imagine if we just did one of these things how much better the world would be!=

You belong! Let’s start with acceptance!

Share this video with your friends and family members if you or someone you know needs acceptance!
